First, let us say that today WE REMEMBER! We can’t believe it’s been 17 years since 9/11 and we will never forget. Our hearts and prayers continue to be with the families of those who lost their lives on that tragic day.
Today, Alecia and I took a drive to Virginia Beach. We were a little worried because the morning news from Norfolk (a city close to Virginia Beach) was encouraging residents of these coastal cities to evacuate now, well before Hurricane Florence’s pending arrival on Thursday, and we were heading into the evacuation zone. Traffic was good; we saw some backups the opposite direction and thought they could potentially be evacuees, but it turned out to be road construction that had created a bottleneck. We decided to continue the hour drive towards the coast.
Upon arrival, we stopped at Target to pick up a few things and thought we’d replenish the household bottled water supply. There was no water to be found. Upon asking a clerk to point me in the right direction he laughed heartily. A minute later, he composed himself and said to come back tomorrow morning at 8 am. They restock with the new shipment then and it will all be gone by 10 am. Same story at the Walmart market. Water and bread seem to be at the top of everyone’s list.
Alecia found a beach that got excellent reviews on Trip Advisor called Sandbridge Beach. Evidently, It’s the beach the locals don’t want you to know about. Soft sand, clean, and not crowded. It was perfect! Absolutely beautiful and very therapeutic. The sun was shining. The sand was hot. The water was warm. Our souls drank up the sound of the waves. We breathed in the smell of the ocean and let it fill us up. It was our first time putting our feet in the Atlantic Ocean and we can now add that to our ocean list. We seriously could have stayed there all day.
After the beach, we decided to extend our drive further south and head into North Carolina, Alecia’s birth state. On the way to North Carolina, navigation took us on roads we never would have chosen. All of a sudden we drove by a big home with two gorgeous, white, Johnson Phantom cars. We made a u-turn and took a shot. The cars reminded us of Disney’s 101 Dalmatians, and the fact they were facing one another was the icing on the cake.
We made our way to Elizabeth City in North Carolina and found a Starbucks to pick up a couple of “Been There” mugs and then turned to Trip Advisor for the best cheap eats in the area. We ended up at the Quality Seafood Company. Let’s just say Trip Advisor got that one wrong.
Can I say, I love the Maps app?! It really allows you to get where you want to go like a local. And the added speed limit feature is a real bonus. We decided to check for bottled water at a Costco on our way back. They didn’t have water bottles, but they had gallons of water in a 6-pack case that were disappearing quickly so we added one to our cart.
Back at the condo, we learned Nathalie had been to Walmart and picked up seltzer water in the absence of spring water. Uncle Jim and Aunt Grace arrived at Food Line at the same time as a delivery truck and were able to procure bottled water. The impending weather has brought up some interesting discussions on disaster preparedness and, as always, our evening routine of dinner and conversation continues to be the highlight of the day. The most intriguing tales at the table award must go to Nathalie. 😲👊🏻🇨🇴🇬🇷 Let’s just say we’re so thankful we’re on the same team! 😂🤣
