We all slept well, as one would expect after being awake 36 hours. A text from Sophie alerted us to the horrible news of the Las Vegas massacre. Our hearts go out to all the many people affected. We’ve experienced a bit of anxiousness with the recent events so it was extra good to FaceTime with cousin Kathleen and Jax today.
Our Airbnb is an old fisherman’s home converted into 4 apartments. It has real wood shutters on all windows and also on the door leading to the balcony. The feel of the home encompasses what you think of when you picture dwellings in old France. Sophie told us Marseille is the oldest city in the country, over 2600 years old. There is a small market right below us, Sam’s, so this morning we bought apples and water before venturing out, on foot, to find an ATM. Next, we made a stop at a skateboard shop and changed our 10 euros into coins to catch the bus, then the metro, to return to St Charles station to pick up our rental car. Even though the roads are extremely narrow here (even more so than Sydney) Russ felt more in his element being able to get around on his own versus public transport. Another huge sigh of relief came when the data started working on our cell phone making it possible to use maps navigation to get around. The roads are packed with small cars and scooters (or mopeds). The scooters weave in and out of traffic and pull in front of you every chance they get. Cars park on the side of the road by straddling the street and the sidewalk making a cramped situation even tighter. We’ve included a photo of the Statue of David as he stands to mark the entrance to the sea. We took a drive this evening around the south end of Marseille, away from the city, and along the Mediterranean Sea. There are many places to pull over and take in the sights. Watching the sunset was so peaceful...breathtakingly beautiful. We are discovering we prefer touring the countryside over the inner workings of the city.
